In the field of precision measurement within manufacturing, online projection measuring instruments have gradually become essential tools for quality inspection on production lines due to their efficiency and accuracy. However, many users harbor misconceptions regarding their functional limitations and applicable scenarios.

1. Precision: Micron-level measurement, but with functional limitations.

The measurement accuracy of online projection measuring instruments can reach 0.1μm, meeting the dimensional inspection requirements for high-precision components such as electronic components and precision molds. However, their technical principles impose functional limitations:

  • Supports external contour dimension measurement: Through optical projection imaging, it can rapidly capture two-dimensional contour dimensions of workpieces (such as length, width, circular hole diameter, etc.), suitable for batch inspection of flat parts.

  • Does not support three-dimensional contour scanning: It cannot obtain depth, height, or surface morphology data of workpieces. For three-dimensional measurement, equipment such as laser scanners or coordinate measuring machines must be selected.

Application Recommendations:For inspection requirements involving only planar dimensions, an online projection measuring instrument offers the best value for money. For three-dimensional data, additional equipment must be configured or a composite measuring system selected.

II. Speed: Millisecond-level response, but subject to specific scenario requirements.

The online projection measuring instrument is renowned for its speed. After programming is complete, it takes only 35 milliseconds to finish inspection once the workpiece is placed in the measurement area, significantly boosting production line efficiency. However, its speed advantage depends on specific conditions:

  • Non-through holes cannot capture contours: If workpieces contain closed through holes (such as deep holes or blind holes), optical projection cannot penetrate or diffract light, preventing the acquisition of internal hole contour data. In such cases, contact probes or industrial CT scanning technology must be employed.

  • Requires Pre-Programming for Path Optimization: Rapid inspection relies on pre-set measurement programs, including workpiece positioning and measurement point planning. If production lines frequently switch product models, allow sufficient time for programming and debugging.

Application Recommendations:Suitable for full inspection on production lines with high volume and low variety; if product types are numerous and changeovers frequent, the balance between programming costs and inspection efficiency must be evaluated.

III. Form Factor: Compact and flexible, but requires compatibility for embedding.

Online projection measuring instruments are typically designed to be compact with a small footprint, enabling flexible deployment alongside production lines or on workbenches. They support full inspection mode on production lines (i.e., 100% inspection of every product). However, their integration into production lines requires meeting the following conditions:

  • Standard models do not support direct embedding: Most standard devices require auxiliary equipment such as robotic arms or conveyor belts to integrate with production lines, enabling automated loading/unloading and measurement.

  • Customized embedding requires technical adaptation: If the measuring instrument needs to be directly integrated into the production line (e.g., embedded into assembly line tracks), communication with equipment suppliers is necessary to customize interfaces, communication protocols, and synchronization control logic, resulting in higher costs.

Application Recommendations:Prioritize devices supporting standard industrial communication protocols to facilitate integration with production line PLC systems. For deep integration, plan production line layout and physical space for measurement instruments in advance.

Online projection measuring instruments are powerful tools for flat-surface dimensional inspection, but their technical limitations must be clearly understood: they are suitable for high-precision flat-surface dimensional inspection, full inspection on high-volume production lines, and inspection environments with limited space; however, they are not suitable for three-dimensional topography measurement, deep hole/blind hole inspection, or flexible production lines requiring frequent changeovers.
